This chapter discusses Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which guarantees the right to life, the most basic human right of all. Topics covered include the obligation to protect the right to life by law; preventive action; health care and other social services; the procedural obligation to investigate; application of the obligation to protect life to non-fatal cases; protection of the unborn child; and the prohibition of the taking of life by the use of force.
