Abstract
This chapter examines how real the checks, controls, and safeguards provided in the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 are, and also evaluates the effect of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Human Rights Act 1998. The discussions cover the powers and duties of the custody officer; detention without charge; deaths in custody; the right to legal advice; and remedies for those whose rights are breached.
